"Tor to Door" on Dartmoor is now officially recognised as the ONLY supplier of Beef from Dartmoor able to make claims relating to it's provenance ...
Dartmoor based Fresh Meat Delivery Service and Butchery "Tor to Door" has been issued with a Certificate of Conformity relating to the origin of the Beef it sells via the Beef Labelling Scheme.
The Beef Labelling system is a European Community-wide scheme which is intended to provide buyers with clear, reliable information about beef on sale.
A key requirement of the system is that it should enable beef on sale to be traced back to where it originated.
Any other claims that Beef sellers include relating to the breed type, rearing process etc also require approval under the scheme.
Compliance with the scheme is administered by Trading Standards who made the following comment on this news ...
"Devon County Council Trading Standards is delighted that Tor to Door has achieved approval for origin claims about its beef, this is a real achievement and gives customers a high degree of confidence in the meat being offered for sale.
Devon County Council Trading Standards actively encourages local food businesses to comply with the law because it helps them to more effectively market their foods. Our Inspectors often find that local food businesses can make more claims than they do about their food but don't always realise this.
To make origin claims about fresh or frozen beef, a business must apply for approval through the Rural Payments Agency so that the claims can be authenticated by an independent auditor. Local food means less food miles and offers better welfare for animals because they are not transported over long distances.
The voluntary Beef Labelling Scheme is designed to support honest businesses and to protect consumers. It helps consumers to buy local beef from local farms, which is great news for everyone".
Tor to Door is one of just 120 retailers of Beef in England that has officially earned the right to make claims relating to it's Beef produce.
The claims now covered by the Scheme for Beef supplied by Tor to Door include:
Origin - Born, raised and slaughtered onDartmoor
Breed - Native Breeds (Galloway, South Devon, Aberdeen Angus)
Date of Slaughter, Age at Slaughter, Hanging period 14 to 28 days
