Commenting on this new initiative, Ben Norris, Teacher Lead of the Young Enterprise Team (Y.E.T.), says: “When we set up Y.E.T. last year one of our main aims was to work with local companies and develop new products. We have really enjoyed our visits to the Chilli Farm and are delighted to have helped with the development of the Honeycomb Chilli Chocolate. It has offered a great education programme for the children, seeing the whole process from growing chillies in the polytunnels to the actual making of the Chilli Chocolate.”
Steve Waters, co-founder of the South Devon Chilli Farm, added: “The process has been educational for us too and we received some fantastic feedback from the group.” He continued: “It’s very important to us to work closely with the local community and we hope to do more projects along a similar line in the future.”
On an ongoing basis, 30p of every online sale will be donated to the Y.E.T. at Oreston Community Academy. The Honeycomb Chilli Chocolate has an RRP of £3.64 (for in excess of 100 grams of ‘wafers’).
The combination of chocolate and chillies has been popular in South America and Mexico since the Mayans and Aztecs and they really do go together superbly. To make the Honeycomb Chilli Chocolate, delicious Belgian plain chocolate is subtly blended with select chillies from the South Devon Chilli Farm and a generous helping of chunky honeycomb.
The Honeycomb Chilli Chocolate contains the following ingredients: dark chocolate (74% cocoa solids: 60% minimum), honeycomb: 25%, ground dried chilli: 1%, emulsifier: soya lecithin, natural vanilla. It is the latest addition to the South Devon Chilli Farm’s portfolio of award-winning Chilli Chocolates, as follows: Original, Orange, Fruit & Spice, Coffee Bean, Mint and Extreme. The Extreme Chilli Chocolate is made with the mighty Bhut Jolokia chilli so is perfect for those who like it seriously hot. Also, in the range, is a Chilli Drinking Chocolate which makes a wonderfully warming Mexican style hot chocolate drink (250 grams, £6.26).
Dick and James Strawbridge recently visited the South Devon Chilli Farm, as featured on The Hungry Sailors programme (19th January 2012, ITV). Commenting on the Chilli Chocolate, James said: “It smells amazing. Rich, dark and full of promise. We should look at using Chilli Chocolate in our cooking as well as fresh chillies.” (Go to link - http://www.itv.com/itvplayer/video/?Filter=301019).
