Fare and Wide Farmers Market
Venue: Widewell Primary School, Lulworth Drive, Roborough, Plymouth, PL6 7ER
Pupils from years four, five and six at Widewell Primary School in Plymouth have decided to start their own Farmers market especially for their local community.
This summer, the children, aged between seven and ten years of age, will run their market from the school selling locally sourced, fair trade and homemade produce.
With the help of local business professionals, the children have conducted extensive market research and have worked on and chosen the name, brand, produce, location and times to maximise the success of the project.
They are also currently working with a variety of local businesses to produce their own branded products which include: Ice cream (Langage Farm), Crisps (Burts Crisps), Sausages (Moostone Meats Farm), Bread (Manna from Devon), Veg Boxes (Nearly Naked Veg Co.) and Scones (Belinda Connolly).
“I’ve learnt a lot about business and how it works and what goes into running a market. It’s been fun and exciting.”
Ellie May – aged 8
Called ‘Fare and Wide’, the market will take place on: Friday 25th June, Friday 2nd July and Friday 9th July, running from 2.30pm – 4.30pm. Open to everyone.
The market will benefit both the school, members of the local community, many of whom are unable to travel to bigger stores or get the variety of fresh, quality produce that the market will offer and anyone else who would like to come along for the afternoon.
The project is being run in conjunction with RIO the Real Ideas Organisation www.realideas.org
Local and professional traders are able to rent stalls for a small charge to cover costs at this market. All the profits will be put back into the project to enable the market to be run again in the future.
The Fare and Wide market has the capacity for 11 professional trader stalls, 8 local community sellers’ stalls, a café area, and three trader vans or stalls in the car park. Many of these pitches have already been reserved.
