Mitch Tonks whose name is synonymous with all that is good about British fish has opened his
first family seafood restaurant dedicated to the great British favourite of fish and chips. Not a
take-away but a place to sit in and eat top quality but affordable local fish breaded, battered
and grilled alongside some traditional specialities like cracked South Devon crab, jellied eels and
potted shrimps, RockFish Seafood & Chips is a 70 seater beach hut themed restaurant that
promises to add a welcome addition to Dartmouth’s thriving foodie scene.
Mitch, along with longstanding business partner and chef at the acclaimed Seahorse restaurant
Mat Prowse, must be the most enthusiastic fish cooking duo in the South West. Whilst meat
features on their menus they sell virtually none of it, “Very few people come in and aren’t
tempted by seafood, we use only the best and we let the fish be the star of the show – as we
have some of the most amazing fish in the world on our doorstep it’s not hard to do!”, says
Mitch.
RockFish Seafood & Chips is their third opening since parting company with FishWorks 3 years
ago. Their philosophy and passion remains the same, to bring the best in local seafood to the
high street and get us enjoying fish in a way more familiar to some of continental neighbours.
“The Spanish and Italians have a great love of seafood and a respect for really good fresh food,
so much so that they import a lot of fish from the UK, I want to spread the word and make sure
that people here get to enjoy this amazing produce”, says Tonks. Just 3 doors away from his
highly successful Seahorse restaurant, recently described by the Times as ‘perfect’ will it not be
competing with himself? “The Seahorse is all about the best local produce and includes some
of the more top end species like lobster and turbot, whilst we keep the atmosphere relaxed it is
probably more elegant, Rockfish is all about accessibility, fun & fantastic fish”
